Re: Oscar Nominations

The sole anomaly was Nightmare Alley, which has to have the oddest nomination profile of any best picture nominee under this recent system: cinematography/production design/costume design/film. Someone mentioned Black Panther as antecedent, but that had a somewhat broader panoply of categories -- b...

Billie Eilish is one of the youngest (if not the youngest) non-acting nominee ever, having turned 20 just a few months ago.
Actually Marketa Irglova was younger than Eilish when she won best song back in 2008.
Good catch!

Re: Oscar Nominations

It's a shame Encanto submitted the wrong song, since "We Don't Talk About Bruno" has turned into a genuine phenomenon and become Disney's first pop chart-topping song since previous Original Song winner "A Whole New World" 30 years ago. "Bruno" could have turned into a...

Other interesting little facts: THE POWER OF THE DOG is the most nominated film directed by a woman. Jane Campion is the first woman to be nominated twice for Directing. Ari Wegner is only the second woman to be nominated for Cinematography. Billie Eilish is one of the youngest (if not the youngest)...

SAG was pretty bad this year too, setting a new record of 8 differences between its slate and the eventual Oscar nominees.

Re: Building a Best Picture Slate, Through Directors and Scripts

Good analysis Mister Tee. What I find interesting is how even with up to 10 Best Picture nominees possible, some highly nominated films can still miss out. Since the switch-over in 2009, the movie with the most nominations not nominated for the top prize is CAROL (6 nominations). This is my second f...

Re: Everything Old Is New Again

I love the parallels you found. I may be one of the few people on this planet who thinks THE PIANO is superior to SCHINDLER'S LIST (which is not a knock on the latter film, I just love the former so much). I will be particularly pleased to see Campion win her first directing Oscar, and I really hope...

Re: DGA Nominations

Since we've been looking at the surprise resurgence of the lone director nomination in Best Directing, I'm thinking Ryusuke Hamaguchi might be the odd-man in. His film did well with critics, but there's rumor that one film critics love isn't well liked by Academy voters. I might have thought Power ...

Just what everyone was expecting. Anderson Branagh Campion Spielberg Villeneuve Agreed, exactly what we were expecting. Of course, there is usually one disagreement between Oscar and the Guild. Last time all five matched up was 2009. Just yesterday I would have said LICORICE PIZZA is on the bubble,...

The disqualified BELFAST will be nominated for the Oscar, but who will it knock out? I would love to say KING RICHARD or DON'T LOOK UP, but I worry it will be THE FRENCH DISPATCH. Likewise, the disqualified THE POWER OF THE DOG and THE LOST DAUGHTER will be nominated, with possibly DRIVE MY CAR join...

A Hero , Iran (Ashgar Farhadi) 9/10 - A man, on furlough from jail for unpaid debts, finds a bag of gold and returns it to the owner and becomes a viral hero on the Internet. But of course, things will not always go well for him. The worst thing I can say about this film is that it's not as great a...
