Re: SAG Awards
Looks like no one is NOT predicting a nod for Streep. This is horrible for film. (Blaming the voters, not the predictors.)

Re: Post-NBR/NYFCC Predicitons
People who vote to nominate Streep this year, like they did last year...these people are the worst. Wasting a nomination on Streep when a more deserving actress could get a major career boost. They're basically limiting the best actress category to only 4 spots up for grabs.

Re: New York Film Critics Circle Winners
I watched Girls Trip tonight and let’s just say that Tiffany Haddish practically walks away with the whole movie. She is very funny in it and has an incredibly charming presence overall. I mean, she makes a line like “A ghost tried to fuck me” work. A cynic could say she’s just playing herself, but...

Re: Oscar Predictions Thread - TIFF to NBR
Will Haddish get nominated for an Oscar? At this point, it depends on The Post and Phantom Thread. If there aren't any standout supporting female performances in either film, I think the case for Haddish will probably have to be made. Haddish herself is enormously likable. They should send her to e...

Re: Oscar Predictions Thread - TIFF to NBR
Captain Fantastic numbers are all that is needed. I question this. Captain Fantastic was a cheap (certainly cheap-looking) indie, for which $5-6 million is viewed as successful; Stronger was a studio movie, I presume far higher-budgeted, and would need to have grossed at least in $10-20 million ran...

Kate Winslet is not winning best actress. Aside from her having won fairly recently and the size of her role, I doubt people will be in the mood to reward a Woody Allen film.

Re: Oscar Predictions Thread - TIFF to NBR
Cate Blanchett got in for her Queen Elizabeth I reprisal in the underwhelming The Golden Age . I'm still not OK with that. Clear case of members scrambling to complete their ballots and choosing Blanchett, sight unseen, based on reputation and memories of the first film. Amy Adams (Enchanted) shoul...

Not an actual reply, but I recommend bookmarking his Grantland page; he writes pretty often around Oscar season, and Grantland is a perfect fit for his commentary (much more so than his EW column).

Re: Best Actor thoughts
Is Bruce Dern's history compelling enough to earn him one of those "career-achievement" Oscars, when it couldn't for Peter Fonda in 1997? Fonda had a truly iconic role behind him (need I mention it?), whereas I don't know what Dern's would be. Even Fonda's daughter was more popular in her ...

Oh, and perhaps the lost lamb I most miss: Max Wilder who was exceptionally smart and perceptive -- I think he was a student at UVA Didn't Max Wilder go to Duke? I remember he can Cam getting into it quite a bit. Big, I think you're right that Max Wilder went to Duke -- I knew it was a top drawer s...
