Re: Broadcast Film Critics (Critics' Choice) Awards
Weird. So I guess they grew tired of everyone badmouthing them for shamelessly trying to give "critics" a bad name and predicting the Oscar nominees by going all MTV Movie Awards on us. Good for them. Should be a fun show, if nothing else. How many categories will Jennifer Lawrence and Ann...

Re: Life of Pi reviews
I adored it. I've loved the book for a long time and was anxious about this film right up until the opening credits rolled - when that wonderful opening sequence of animals in the zoo, set to Mychael Danna's beautiful score, won me over instantly. I do wonder what original directorial choice M. Nigh...

Re: Preliminary Visual Effects List
Quite surprised The Impossible isn't on the list.
Life of Pi should win this with ease.

Re: Preliminary Oscar Predictions
Okay, so I may be basing this on tweets from Tweeter, but I think a lot of people are underestimating the chances of The Hobbit. Also, I see Les Misérables becoming this years Dreamgirls. Re The Hobbit: possibly, but I doubt it. I think Jackson would have to show us something extraordinary, and it ...

On IMDb The Sessions only has a credit for screenwriter Ben Lewin, no source author or material listed.

Re: Les Miserables
Fair enough! Although in a tight year, Tommy Lee Jones + loveable curmudgeon + hammy gestures seems to me like a possible tie-breaker. But as I say, I've yet to see it. I've only seen Arkin of the actors who seem to have a fighting chance and his role seems a little throwaway fluff to prevail, altho...

Re: Les Miserables
Tommy Lee Jones isn't winning. Lincoln won't be released in my part of the world until early next year but I thought his performance was considered something of a frontrunner? Scene-stealing from a much-loved veteran who is certainly an actor who would be widely seen as worthy of two Oscars... soun...

Re: Preliminary Oscar Predictions
Yes, scary how shallow the choices are out there this year. In some categories certainly, but this does look like it could be the first time since the field expanded where the most likely best picture candidates are all very widely liked, by critics at least. I haven't had the chance to see anythin...

Re: Best Picture and Director 1939
Of all movies which have won the best picture Oscar, Gone With the Wind is perhaps the one which its impossible to imagine not having won. Think about it, GWTW not being a best picture movie is simply unthinkable. Which is not to say its my favourite of the year. Lots of brilliant stuff in it, one o...

Re: Best Picture and Director 1940
What a year. I haven't seen Kitty Foyle or Our Town but the rest are all, at the very least, respectable choices. Hard to argue with the magnificent Rebecca as best picture, but I actually (marginally) prefer Foreign Correspondent, perhaps my favourite of Hitchcock's 40s movies, and its my pick here...

Re: The Dark Knight Rises reviews
Penelope is on the money. For me, this is the first fully enjoyable, genuinely thrilling movie in the series. Without a Heath Ledger at the centre to dwarf all around it it tells a convoluted but compelling story in pretty expert style. Its Bale's best performance in the role by a mile, and he's abl...

Life of Pi
Ang Lee's adaptation of Yann Martel's Life of Pi finally has an official trailer. This is one of those very rare movies which I really, really want to be great. The book, which I adore (while accepting that it's literary Marmite) seems like a very tricky one to film. But if Lee pulls it off, this ju...

Re: Last Seen Movie - The Latest Movie You Have Seen; rating
I saw this as part of a LGBT festival here in Singapore a few months ago. The concept intrigued me, but the execution was uniformly awful... for me, possibly the worst movie I've seen in a theatre in several years. Glad you seem to agree with my verdict!Precious Doll wrote: Private Romeo (2012) Alan Brown 2/10

Re: Best Supporting Actor 1997
Voted for Forster's sweet, layered performance - one so touching it doesn't feel like it belongs in Tarantino's universe, and the easy class of this batch.
