Re: Henry Kissinger Dies
One of the all-time pieces of shit. Behind the Bastards did a very good series on him a couple of years ago.

Re: The Official Review Thread of 2023
We’re off-topic but the farther out I get from 2019, increasingly my favorite of the nominees is DiCaprio for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, the one time he would be my choice. I agree with this. Once Upon a Time in Hollywod has become a real comfort food watch for me and I don't think DiCaprio has...

Re: R.I.P. Rosalynn Carter
Independent of politics, she was one of the most decent people ever to live in the White House.

Re: The Official Review Thread of 2023
The Exorcist: Believer This would probably have a 20-point higher Rotten Tomatoes score if it were just a standalone horror movie, and with a few small adjustments, it could be. On those terms, it would still not be good, but I think a lot, even most, of the hostility has been due to how it ties it...

Re: R.I.P. Terence Davies
He was reportedly due to make another film this fall. I watched all of his movies last year, and he became one of my favorite filmmakers through that marathon. Nine features, and it's a beautifully symmetric filmography: Began with two autobiographical films, followed by two adaptations, followed by...

Re: The Official Review Thread of 2023
I have not written about it, and I guess it has been more like 15 years since I've watched it, although I'm going to try it again since I have a week+ off starting this evening. (Although it won't be as laid back as normal, as I am now a cross country coach and we have three meets over the break.) I...

Have not seen it in 10+ years, but I loved Darjeeling and find myself exhausted by everything he's done post-Grand Budapest.

Re: Post-Festival Predictions
Joker and A Star is Born both did Venice (and TIFF) but they both also opened soon after those festivals. Warner historically opens their Oscar hopefuls in early Fall and then reserves December for "entertainments" although they have had Oscar contenders released in December, obviously. (...

Re: Post-Festival Predictions
The Color Purple has test screened four or five times, which might be an indication that someone thought that there was something not working in that movie.

Beyond that, though, I don't really understand why any Republican is running as not-Trump when there are a half dozen of them (or more). Is it only to be his VP? I can't imagine him selecting anyone who was on that stage. Especially since none of them are willing to actually go against him in any r...

Re: List of submissions to the 96th Academy Awards for Best International Film
Hamaguchi's film doesn't release in Japan within the eligibility window so was not eligible here, but should be next year. (Although from what I've read, I question whether they'll submit it then.)

Re: Best Picture and Director 1972
It sounds like The Emigrants benefited from a longer release window but we're lucky that even made it in (I assume, I haven't seen it yet). It is really great in my opinion! It and The New Land are pretty impossible to separate in my mind, and if you ever get a chance to watch them in pretty close ...

I mainly mean that a large part of his personality has been based on things like medical/vaccine conspiracy theories, which a large segment of the MAGA crowd is super into, and on trying to establish himself as a populist, anti-establishment outsider. (Although he's not, as a Kennedy.)

Re: New Developments III
I think that one thing in Ramaswamay's favor is that he came in kind of unknown, at least to the masses; didn't come in with years of Trump associations like Pence or Haley. Doesn't have the issue of having taken a stance against Trump like Will Hurd or Christie (again) Pence. Hasn't built his whole...
