Just to clarify. By 'over the top' you mean it makes a great film even better, not 'over the top' meaning 'overdone', yes?
Having also seen it, I’m pretty sure he means the former. It has a really great ending/coda.

With the expansion of the Best Picture category, I feel like I have to add an *asterisk to a lot of those milestones. I was not a huge fan o...

Re: Killers of the Flower Moon reviews

Sabin, the “birth of the FBI” storyline (which, as I’ve gathered is a HUGE part of the book) is minimized in favor of telling the emotional story of this extended family and what happens to them. I felt like it was just the right amount of it and that Scorsese struck the right balance between the tw...

Re: R.I.P. Suzanne Sommers

I've seen Serial Mom but I don't remember her in it, beside which playing oneself is technically not acting. This is truly one of the dumbest things I think I’ve ever seen posted here. We’ll be sure to let John Malkovich know. You trotting this out instead of (yet again) just admitting that you wer...

Re: R.I.P. Burt Young

He worked pretty constantly, both in film and television. It's nice that he has an Academy Award to his credit. He's the kind of character actor who rarely gets a moment of recognition. I remember him being a pretty unexceptional coattail nomination but after rewatching the film recently he's still...

Re: Killers of the Flower Moon reviews

I attended a sneak preview of Killers of the Flower Moon tonight. Still processing as I literally just walked out, but this is a major work from Scorsese and included some interesting “surprises” that I won’t give away including some really greats cameos. Lily Gladstone is very much a borderline sup...

Re: R.I.P. Suzanne Sommers

Not familiar with Step by Step , but I do recall the Thigh Master ads which were everywhere. Sure, she made a ton of money with Thigh Master so good for her, but I was focused on her acting career which was non-existent for decades. Yes, you keep saying that. And, no, her acting career was not “non...

Re: R.I.P. Suzanne Sommers

Three's Company - Suzanne, John Ritter, Joyce DeWitt, Audra Lindley, Norman Fell all in iconic performances from 1976-1982. The magic left with Suzanne in a contract dispute and never recovered although it struggled for two more years. Her career never recovered either though she was often in the n...

Re: The Official Review Thread of 2023

Did you also see the three other shorts also based on Roald Dahl short stories? Namely The Swan , The Rat Catcher and Poison ? If you binge all 4 together, it’s basically an entirely new Wes Anderson feature! Jesus, that sounds like fucking hell. Is that specific to this project or do you not like ...

Re: The Official Review Thread of 2023

Don't know if it counts as a movie -- short, I presume -- but I watched The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar the other night. It's a perfectly pleasant thing, with a (typically) over-qualified cast. Wes at this point seems all in on the narrative-within-narrative-within-narrative, and I can see peopl...

Re: Post-Festival Predictions

I think Rhea Perlman could sneak in for Barbie if the Academy really goes for it. She was perfect in a small, but important role and that category is weak as hell this year.

Emma Stone has entered the room. Her reviews for Poor Things are at near-rapturous levels and it seems like she will at least be nominated and possibly be in second win territory.

Michael Cera was also a stand-out. He was really funny every time “Allan” showed up on the screen.
