Re: Notable Firsts and Records

Greg wrote:I mentioned this in the General Ceremony Discussion; but, Going My Way technically has 6 as its screenplay won awards both for story and screenplay.

You are right - Going My Way with 2 writing awards to match the weirdness of two acting nominations for Barry Fitzgerald.

Re: Notable Firsts and Records

Everything, Everywhere All At Once is the first film to win 6 above the line categories (Picture, Director, three acting wins and Screenplay), breaking the record of It Happened One Night, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and The Silence of the Lambs . The films below were tied for 5 above the line ...

Re: Best Actor

Austin Butler must be devastated. If I were him I'd certainly think I was the favorite going in.

Re: 95th Oscars General Ceremony Discussion

An excessive number of standing ovations which seemed creepy to me.

Made me think of the kids on Valentine's Day who didn't get a lot, if any, cards from the others in school.

Re: Final Thoughts

Does anyone know who is presenting Best Picture?

I was hoping for Gene Hackman as there isn't much time left.

Re: Best Popular Film Oscar - What if?

If I felt EEAAO was the very best picture of the year why would I not also vote for it as best pop pic, as well, unless I wanted to spread the wealth.

Best Popular Film Oscar - What if?

Imganine the clusterfuck if AMPAS had gone through with its Best Popular Film Oscar proposal of a few years ago?! Which films would have been nominated this year in that category: Avatar, Black Panther, EEAAO, Elvis, Top Gun…but not The Fabelmans (low box office and therefore not popular)? Would vot...

Re: 2023 Governor's Ball Menu

One can only imagine...

1) the food waste that gets tossed in the trash the next morning; and

2) the whopping bill AMPAS gets from Wolfgang Puck.

Re: Categories One-by-One: Film Editing

There is a post-Oscar question hanging out there. If it wins everything but Best Picture, will there be a serious campaign to end the preferential balloting? That would be interesting since I’ve heard for decades how fundamentally undemocratic the “first-past-the-post” voting system is for politica...

Re: Categories One-by-One: Leading Actress

I cannot see EEAAO getting three acting Oscars ala A Streetcar Named Desire. I think Supporting Actor is a lock. Then, if it gets Supporting Actress, that's it and Cate wins. If it misses Supporting Actress, Yeoh's chances are better. If it only gets one acting award I think it misses Best Picture.

Magilla, if you still have Newspapers.com why don't you check to see if you can track down the missing Golden Globe nominees from the first decade.

I didn’t watch the show but heard it was a good one and, incredibly, it snowed in Los Angeles over the weekend. Hollywood hasn’t seen this much white powder since Bob Evans made Chinatown.

Re: Oscar Nominations

Sally Kirkland's nomination was due to her self-promotion. Her nomination came at the expense of some highly regarded performances including those of Maggie Smith in The Lonely Passion of Judith Hearne , Lillian Gish in The Whales of August , Faye Dunaway in Barfly , and Joanne Woodward in The Glas...

If this is the goal or mandate than abolish AMPAS and let a government-controlled politburo pick the nominees, Soviet-style.
