Re: Telecast Discussion
The punch looked staged, but based on Chris Rock's face (and totally flustered delivery) it seemed very real.

Re: Telecast Discussion
I'm not sure what the pre-taped wins are supposed to do other than look very choppily edited into the show. They are saving maybe 20 seconds by not having the winners amble up to the stage?

R.I.P. Taylor Hawkins (Foo Fighters)
https://pitchfork.com/news/foo-fighters-taylor-hawkins-has-died/ To most of my generation, Hawkins was a monster behind the kit, along with being an apparently genuinely good guy. I've been lukewarm on the Foos since the turn of the millennium but they're one of those bands who seemed destined to c...

Re: Categories One-by-One: Song
Serious question: can Diane Warren really be enjoying these yearly pointless nominations? I think I'd find it humiliating, but of course I'm not her. I think she enjoys the attention. I'm sure she wants to win but if she won those Oscar bloggers who give her attention every year wouldn't give her a...

Re: Categories One-by-One: Animated Feature
"We Don't Talk About Bruno" is a genuine phenomenon; it's currently in its fifth week at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 (the first and only song from a Disney animated movie since "A Whole New World" reached #1 - for one week - in 1992, and the longest-running Disney #1 period, repl...

Re: The Official Review Thread of 2021
It's not that these things are awful; they mostly achieve perfect mediocrity. But I'd say the lack of narrative imagination has slowly eroded their (young) audience's capacity for stories...to the point they can't cope with a film that doesn't slot them into such a comfortable "I recognize thi...

Re: Oscar Nominations
Apologies if someone has brought this one up earlier, but Kenneth Branagh has now been nominated in a record 7 different categories: - Best Picture (his first nomination) - Best Director - Best Actor - Best Supporting Actor - Best Adapted Screenplay - Best Original Screenplay (his first nomination) ...

Re: Oscar Nominations
It's a shame Encanto submitted the wrong song, since "We Don't Talk About Bruno" has turned into a genuine phenomenon and become Disney's first pop chart-topping song since previous Original Song winner "A Whole New World" 30 years ago. "Bruno" could have turned into a ...

Re: Oscar Nominations
I'm very excited at the prospect of an Oscar telecast that features wins by ?uestlove, Billie Eilish and Jonny Greenwood. It's hard to come to terms that Wes Anderson's time with the Oscars on a larger level was for The Grand Budapest Hotel , I was hoping The French Dispatch could see some love for ...

Re: Official A LITTLE LIFE Thread
Yanagihara's follow-up to A Little Life was recently released; To Paradise is a three-volume novel weighing in at 700 pages and has received some divisive reviews. I have it on hold at the library and will probably start it later this week, with some slight reluctance. Anyone else still haunted/trau...

Re: 93rd Oscars: Ceremony Discussion
Had Hopkins actually been there to give a speech, it would have ended better than it did. They should have anticipated a possible win for him and switched Best Actor and Actress to guarantee that the last winner of the night would be there. Just imagine Frances's speech capping off the evening (whi...
