Re: SAG Awards

Lincoln isn't out here until the Thursday before the Oscars, so I may or may not get to see it prior to Oscar night (morning, for me - fortunately Monday is the start of my weekend!) but, sight unseen, I can very easily see it taking best actor and nothing more. If Argo takes best picture - and yes,...

Re: Last Seen Movie - The Latest Movie You Have Seen; rating

Lawrence and Cooper win a dance contest with moves that should have gotten them thrown off the dance floor I wasn't a big fan of this movie either (although I DID like Cooper a lot, best thing about it by a mile - I believe this is the first film I've actually seen him in). But, to be fair, they di...

Re: 2012 Oscar Nominations

So if there were five nominees this year who would they be? Clearly Life of Pi, Lincoln and Silver Linings Playbook would be up there. Argo too - the director miss is fluky, but I don't think the film itself would have anything to worry about. For the fifth slot things get a little hazy but I suspec...

Re: PGA Winners

If Affleck does win the DGA - which I think is a very real possibility - then who takes the corresponding Oscar? Clearly this has the potential to be up in the air right up until the big night. A consolation for Spielberg? Ang Lee? Dare one suggest Haneke? David O. Russell may actually have the seco...

So... do you think this has a shot at winning the best picture Oscar?

Re: Categories One-by-One: Makeup and Hairstyling

Lincoln's omission indeed seems odd, but this has always been an eccentric branch at times. Hitchcock can be discounted immediately so it's Les Mis vs. The Hobbit and I think Les Mis will edge it. The grime, the beards, the (not entirely successful) efforts to de-glam Anne Hathaway... I think the be...

Re: R.I.P. Nagisa Oshima

I finished watching Diary of a Shinjuku Thief literally minutes before learning of his passing. Very sad news. While the film was a mixed bag for me (as was Gohatto - the only other Oshima movie I've seen to date) it was very much the work of a unique visionary.

Or we could call it a surprise Sally Field - a couple of hours after Sally Field pulls a surprise Ingrid Bergman.

Re: Screen Actors Guild Award Nominations

Yes, I don't see anyone but Tommy Lee Jones winning the SAG. Three awards for Lincoln, most likely - Day-Lewis and the cast too. Whether that will give Lee Jones the momentum to win a second Oscar depends on a lot - including whether the Academy have the stomach for Django Unchained or feel obliged ...

Re: Post-ballot Predictions

But then again, the cineaste/cinephile wing of the Academy pushed through for The Tree of Life The Tree of Life (a film I disliked) is a day at the beach next to Amour (a film I loved). Seriously, I'd be happy to be proven wrong but I don't see a nomination for it. When was the last time a film as ...

Re: Art Directors Guild nominations

I'd say Anna Karenina, yes. Costume Design and - maybe - Production Design Oscars unless Les Mis becomes an undeniable frontrunner. Lincoln isn't out here yet but from what I've seen of it it doesn't seem flashy enough to take many of the below-the-line prizes.

Re: Art Directors Guild nominations

I'm sure there was plenty of worth set work in Les Miserables but Hooper failed to show us much of it. Honestly, this film should have been opened out and made to feel more epic - although I enjoyed much of the movie, I don't recall the last time a huge-budget production felt so small and stage-boun...

Re: Why I'm Looking Ahead to SAG

The day may come when a foreign-language film wins best picture but - and I say this having not yet had the chance to see Amour - I highly doubt it will be a Haneke movie. Foreign-language film yes; screenplay, maybe. But surely the Oscars are not likely to reward this movie with anything more signi...
