Re: The Official Review Thread of 2023
All I can think of is a lot of people didn't like Richard Jewell (I think that movie has problems but is also misunderstood) and maybe they got tired of her spending the better part of a decade in increasingly-unwatchable Ryan Murphy shows.

Re: Oscar Shortlists
Tár had a credited score even if most of the music in the film was not original, but Maestro has none. The music credit reads "Music by Leonard Bernstein" which it is. All songs and orchestral pieces were either written or performed by Bernstein or both. There is no original music in the ...

Re: Oscar Shortlists
Because the Sound branch has been the most antediluvian, I didn't trust them to include Maestro despite its clear quality (they passed on TAR last year). Tár had a credited score even if most of the music in the film was not original, but Maestro has none. The music credit reads "Music by Leon...

Re: Minor Critics Groups Winners
I don't know where Are You There God... sits for me (haven't tried ranking films for the year, haven't seen a ton either), but I liked it a lot and think it's a really inspired pick. It's also a type of movie that isn't getting made a ton anymore, especially for theatrical platforms, although I wish...

Re: The Color Purple reviews
The Color Purple is one of the few Spielberg movies that I think he might have made better if he had made it twenty or so years later. I've never bought the idea (which you thankfully also don't hear a ton anymore) that Spielberg was a man-child who only became a "mature" filmmaker around...

Re: R.I.P. Andre Braugher
When the songs were licensed, they were licensed for the broadcast and syndication only. This was the typical practice at the time because the concept of streaming and full-series video releases didn't exist at the time. When it was released on DVD, the distributor licensed all of the music, but it ...

Re: R.I.P. Andre Braugher
It's not a coincidence that Homicide was cancelled one season after Braugher left. You could argue that Braugher's Frank Pembleton was in many ways a secondary lead to Kyle Secor's Tim Bayliss. The show definitely started out that way, although Braugher's role got bigger as it became clear that he h...

Re: New Developments III
I saw excerpts from the most recent Republican Presidential debate on YouTube. These debates don't need moderators; they need kindergarten teachers. I was in Tuscaloosa for a conference Tuesday and Wednesday, and when I say that debate inconvenienced every person in that town, I mean it. It was hel...

One of the all-time pieces of shit. Behind the Bastards did a very good series on him a couple of years ago.

Re: The Official Review Thread of 2023
We’re off-topic but the farther out I get from 2019, increasingly my favorite of the nominees is DiCaprio for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, the one time he would be my choice. I agree with this. Once Upon a Time in Hollywod has become a real comfort food watch for me and I don't think DiCaprio has...

Independent of politics, she was one of the most decent people ever to live in the White House.

Re: The Official Review Thread of 2023
The Exorcist: Believer This would probably have a 20-point higher Rotten Tomatoes score if it were just a standalone horror movie, and with a few small adjustments, it could be. On those terms, it would still not be good, but I think a lot, even most, of the hostility has been due to how it ties it...

Re: R.I.P. Terence Davies
He was reportedly due to make another film this fall. I watched all of his movies last year, and he became one of my favorite filmmakers through that marathon. Nine features, and it's a beautifully symmetric filmography: Began with two autobiographical films, followed by two adaptations, followed by...

Re: The Official Review Thread of 2023
I have not written about it, and I guess it has been more like 15 years since I've watched it, although I'm going to try it again since I have a week+ off starting this evening. (Although it won't be as laid back as normal, as I am now a cross country coach and we have three meets over the break.) I...
