Re: Categories One-by-One: Documentary Feature
Take Twitter with a kilo of salt, but it seems to have settled on My Octopus Teacher as the predicted winner ever since the DGAs.

Re: Categories One-by-One: Production Design
The Father's fluidly edited transitions between sets that seem similar but aren't quite is one of the features of the film. But that achievement, while noteworthy, is a country mile from what normally triumphs in this category. I’m going to look out for this specifically when I rewatch it. Thanks f...

Re: Categories One-by-One: Visual Effects
Tenet doesn’t have much CGI (that I noticed) but it has a lot of old-fashioned, blow-shit-up visual effects and a great car chase. I wonder if the new, younger membership cares about that distinction.

Re: Categories One-by-One: Visual Effects
Enough people were sick of Disney's cash-in live action remakes that The Lion King fell to 1917 last year I was fine with their voting for Not The Lion King. But why couldn’t it have been Avengers: Endgame? Thanos might be the best CG villain ever, and isn’t one Oscar a proper thank-you for the bil...

Re: Categories One-by-One: Lead Actress
You’re right. I think I imagined a Keaton nomination as an apology of sorts for his loss the year before.

Re: Categories One-by-One: Lead Actress
I don't know if Nomadland is likely to win Best Picture. I think it could happen but it's such an unusual Best Picture winner. I'm coming around to the idea of a Trial of the Chicago 7 upset. It’s already winning best director and stars an Oscar favorite. A Korean film just won BP and three years b...

Re: Screen Actors Guild Award Winners
As I've said many times, the SAG ensemble award is not a Best Picture award, it's a Best Ensemble Award and often goes to the film with the most actors among the nominees Very important to keep in mind. La La Land’s BP loss was a fluke. It was not foretold by the lack of a SAG ensemble nom. It was ...

Good point. Besides, she’s people’s favorite character. She wouldn’t just vanish without mention.Big Magilla wrote:It's left up in the air, but the grandmother was in no shape to be tending them following her stroke. Then again, how much tending would they need after they've reached a certain point in their growth?

Let’s not forget, Emma Stone was announced as the best picture winner. Her support was that deep!

Re: Categories One-by-One: Lead Actress
Mulligan and Davis are the only two winners that make sense, so Mulligan is still alive. McDormand just won her 2nd and she’s likely to get a best picture Oscar this year. Are they really ready to make her mantle more impressive than Meryl Streep’s, Oscar-wise? Kirby (love her, ftr) could win ^ the ...

Minari spoiler question:
Does the grandmother die at the end? There doesn’t appear to be a time jump, but the father says the minari are “growing well on their own.” The grandmother is the one who planted them, so is she no longer there to tend to them?

Re: Screen Actors Guild Award Winners
I followed the leak story on Twitter and never bought it. If a leak is partially wrong, it’s not a leak. Davis’s win wasn’t a shock. She’s one of the most acclaimed actresses in recent history, and the most Oscar nominated Black actress ever. Chicago 7 was wall-to-wall with name actors (whereas Mina...

I’d like to see it go to The Father. I was a rabid denier of its existence until it was available to rent, which I did right away. I can confirm it’s a real movie—and a good one—not something made up by Oscar bloggers who needed to pad their nomination predictions.
