Re: SAG Winners
One could suppose that the average SAG-AFTRA voter has more in common with Joe and Jane Popcorn than it does with serious film critics, and yet none of the SAG winning films are in the race for the Academy's Fan Favorite voted on by the real Joe and Jane Popcorn. Vote closes Thursday, March 3. Curr...

Re: SAG Winners
I've also been generally skeptical about the notion that Kodi Smit-McPhee will win. He has a very good presence throughout the film but I never thought I was watching an Oscar-winning performance. I couldn't tell you what his big scene is. I personally don't have a strong preference between pretty ...

Re: SAG nominations
SAG PREDICTIONS Interesting that both Supporting Actor and Actress only had 2/5 lineup with the Academy. Is this a record? This year is a record overall for largest number of differences between SAG noms and Oscar noms: 8 As for individual categories, these are the years (of movie release) with a 2...

Re: Bad Ideas Never Die: Eight Awards Bumped from the Oscar Telecast
And to add on Oscarguy's point, I think we're overestimating the amount having genuinely popular films affects the ratings. The 2019 year had five films score above $100 million and the genuine blockbuster of the bunch was a frontrunner for best actor. Yet 9 million fewer people watched that show t...

Re: Early impressions
Jeffrey Wright is the first black Commissioner Gordon. It will undoubtedly be the year's first major box-office hit. Where it goes from there only time will tell. Folks want to see a black James Bond and Batman, but they will just have to make do with a black Moneypenny and Commissioner Gordon. At ...

Re: Bad Ideas Never Die: Eight Awards Bumped from the Oscar Telecast
I do wonder if these very public (and frankly embarrassing) ratings woes the Academy is dealing with will influence any voters to pick DUNE for the top prize just to save the telecast. The reason I doubt this is that if any large number of voters voted in order to help the show's ratings, Spider-Ma...

Re: Bad Ideas Never Die: Eight Awards Bumped from the Oscar Telecast
A last thought: The entirety of my post really could've been boiled down to "I'm open to seeing what this looks like" and "I understand why they want to change it." I don't think cutting some of these awards is the worst idea. It really all depends on what they replace that time...

Re: Early impressions
Will THE BATMAN do what THE DARK KNIGHT was unable to, and be nominated for Best Picture? I doubt it, but this trailer suggests the filmmakers considered this movie serious cinema rather than just another comic book action film: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mqqft2x_Aa4 I think we can all agree th...

Re: Early impressions
I don't know. The trailer looks decent and there's been enough distance now from the 1979 TV movie with Kurt Russell and the 2005 mini-series with Jonathan Rhys Meyers that the material could seem fresh. Austin Butler does seem to have the voice down if not necessarily the physicality. This is only...

Early impressions
Just thought I would create a thread for a place to discuss the potential Oscar movies for this year before actual reviews and public screenings. First big contender with an actual trailer is ELVIS: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wBDLRvjHVOY With the exception of AUSTRALIA, I love all of Baz Luhrma...

Re: Oscar Nominations
Do we need to talk about Flee? It got the impressive three nominations; is it doomed to lose all three, or might people feel there's some imperative to get behind it in one spot, to assure it not going home empty-handed? If so, which one? Drive My Car seems to have been pushed to invulnerability, b...

Re: Notable Firsts and Records
Apparently, Kristen Stewart and Ariana DeBose are the first out actors nominated since Ian McKellan in 2002. I'm fairly certain Lady Gaga was openly bisexual when she got nominated a few years ago. Yes, Lady Gaga has said she is gay (she specifically used that word), but much like Jared Let...

Re: Notable Firsts and Records
Apparently, Kristen Stewart and Ariana DeBose are the first out actors nominated since Ian McKellan in 2002. I mean, I guess "out" is a relative term. For example, Jared Leto said he was gay while doing press for ALEXANDER but then his team claimed it was just a joke. Still, very s...

Re: Final Oscar Predictions
Scrolling through these predictions, I think rolotomasi99 deserves kudos, for being the only one to nail the very difficult best actress category. Wow! Thank you. I just refused to believe they were going to nominate Lady Gaga. I like her music, but so far am not impressed with her acting. Also, I ...

Re: Notable Firsts and Records
While quite a few deaf and mute characters have been represented at the Oscars, only two deaf actors have been nominated, with Troy Kotsur being the first male.
