La vita è bella

So I've been looking at a lot of polls and reading a lot of your discussions. I highly value all of your opinions but one thing I seemed to notice is that everyone here seems to have a vendetta against Roberto Benigni in Life is Beautiful . Was it because he beat Tom Hanks, Ian McKellen, Edward Nort...

Re: 2010-2011 Emmy Awards

I'm going to take the liberty of turning this not into a prediction deal but a "who we'd like to see win" deal. I apologize if anyone doesn't want this/wants it on a separate post. Bold is my first-place. Italicized is runner-up . OUTSTANDING DRAMA SERIES Boardwalk Empire Dexter Friday Nig...

Re: Best Actor 1978

I'll agree with all of you: '78s Heaven Can Wait was entirely unnecessary; however, I can see why the Academy drooled over it. The Academy is so quick to hand out nominations to movies where the writer, producer, actor, and director are the same person. I feel that the only case Beatty excelled in a...

Re: Best Actor 1977

I agree with everyone here: this was probably the weakest Best Actor lineup of the '70s. I normally love Burton but I feel that he didn't do his best in Equus . I've seen him do so much better in so many other things. But the fact that I voted for him for The Spy Who Came in from the Cold and Who's ...

Best Actor 1977

I'm about to head off to sleep but I'll post why I chose who I chose tomorrow morning. I figured I'd post this again to help our Magilla.

Re: Best Actress 1976

This shouldn't even be a question. Faye Dunaway gives the best performance of the year entirely. The only person on this list who can hold a candle to her is Marie-Christine Berrault (and I attribute most of this to her "a year ago" speech). Dunaway gives forth such steely harshness and su...

Best Actor 1976

I know Magilla's internet is acting up and he tries to put these polls out on Thursday so I figure I'll spare him the effort and do this for him (and everyone who'll vote). I highly consider this (after 1939) to be the greatest year in film history and these performances are just spectacular. This i...

Re: Best Actor 1999

Sorry, I'm new to the board and I had no idea there were (possibly unwritten) rules on posting. This is just one of the categories I'm most interested in and I hardly find any Best Actor or Best Supporting Actor categories up so I figured I'd throw this one up.

Best Actor 1999

1999 was a very strong year for male leads and one could have a very tough time choosing a winner here. One could debate whether or not Richard Farnsworth's nomination was one of merit or a last-ditch chance to give the man a career Oscar (à la Paul Newman in The Color of Money). I think it was a gr...

Re: Best Supporting Actress 1956

I'm responsible for Heckart now tying with Malone and I'll tell you why. Malone's performance is nothing special in yet another dull Sirk film from the '50s. Eileen Heckart's performance in 'The Bad Seed' can much be compared to Viola Davis's in 'Doubt.' Both are in the film for very short amounts o...
