Re: R.I.P. Terence Davies

Over 15 years ago, Terence Davies wanted to adapt one of my grad school mentor’s novels for film and had actually written a full screenplay for it. Mother of Sorrows by Richard McCann. Richard and Terence had been in conversation on and off for years about this project (Richard really wanted Paul Da...

Chicago Film Critics Association

Glad to see Andrew Scott make an appearance here. He’s my winner in that category by a country mile. Also, thrilled that Julianne Moore is starting to get citations. She is the best she’s been in years in May December. Ditto Natalie Portman who I think people have been sleeping on in Best Actress. N...

Re: The Zone of Interest reviews

I recently read The Zone of Interest and will be very interested to see how this is translated to film. Intelligently written and rather unflinching, it’s told in the viewpoints of a highly connected SS officer, the commandant of the camp (Auschwitz) and a Jewish kapo who is in charge of figuring ou...

Re: Last predictions before precursors

My friend who saw The Color Purple last Tuesday night at the NYC screening (with the cast in attendance) said that all instances of rape and incest have been pretty much deleted from the storyline. Considering how much those crimes wreak havoc on the women in both the book and 1985 film (think Oprah...

Re: Indie Spirit Nominations

I really don’t understand the lumping together of male and female performances in separate lead and supporting rosters. It seems like a total overreaction to the “gender issue” yet deprives two additional actors of potential recognition. So it’s basically just dumb. That said, these are great nomina...

Re: 2023 Michigan Film Critics Guild Awards

I love the Sterling K. Brown nomination. That category seems too crowded for him to make it in this year but he is hysterical in American Fiction and steals every scene he’s in.

Re: NYFCC Winners

I’ll write about this later since I think I might be the only person who has seen it on this board, but I think American Fiction could be the eventual Best Picture winner.

Re: R.I.P. Frances Sternhagen

My college friend is Frances’s cousin and I texted her earlier when I heard the news. She said that the whole family thinks of her as a “legend.” And she was! My favorite is her role in Misery but she had so many memorable roles to choose from. R.I.P.

Re: Saltburn reviews

Yes it’s Talented Mr. Ripley meets Brideshead Revisited meets, oh I don’t know, the maze in The Shining ? But it’s more than a rip-off of any one of those and it is a heck of a lot of fun. I’m going to focus on the performances: Barry Keoghan completely goes there in this film, pushing his chameleon...

Mister Tee wrote To wit: I'd already done The Bear on my previous trip, so I was marginally acquainted with actress Molly Gordon for her Claire role. . Re: All of Us Strangers reviews

I saw All of Us Strangers yesterday. This film is an absolute masterpiece. One of the most real and genuinely stunning depictions of loneliness, grief, love, and longing that has ever been put onto film. Bring a BOX of tissues. There are major plot points that occur in this film that are not even hi...

Someone on Twitter who I trust just saw The Color Purple and said that Danielle Brooks could become the frontrunner now for Best Supporting Actress.

Re: Killers of the Flower Moon reviews

There's a little bit of talk going around about how the "birth of the FBI" angle was minimized in the film. Did you find the movie that we ended up with lacking in any way? Or needing something like that? Refresh my memory, how did you feel about Scorsese's last handful of projects and ho...
