I don't have time for extensive comment, but I thank dws for this fully-researched, greatly informative post.

Re: R.I.P. Joseph Lieberman
I know I'm several days late on this, but in case Sabin still wants an answer to his question re: Gore choosing a different VP... Richard Nixon had polling that showed he ran stronger solo than with any possible running mate, since any choice would antagonize someone. The trick became to choose the ...

Re: R.I.P. Louis Gossett, Jr.
I've seen him a bit more than some of you -- in addition to the obvious Raisin in the Sun/Officer and a Gentleman/Roots, I saw him in The Landlord, Skin Game (a quite funny pairing with James Garner), Travels with My Aunt, The Laughing Policeman...and, much later in life, Diggstown. But the majority...

Re: R.I.P. M. Emmet Walsh
The definitional working actor. Straight Time was the first time I really registered his presence. i'd probably seen him a dozen or more times prior, without quite registering him. But once I zoned in on him, I saw he always made his films better. IMDB shows he kept working steadily, right up to the...

Re: I'm always here for the Trivia
I would put Yuh-jung Youn alongside Robert DeNiro or Benicio Del Toro, in that it is a foreign language performance in an American film. Except they're both foreign-language performances/elements within an otherwise English-speaking film. Unless my memory of Minari is warped -- and, with age/pandem...

Re: I'm always here for the Trivia
- Second consecutive year that the Best International Film wins sound. Too soon to talk about any trend but it is striking. I think you're confusing this with BAFTA. The sound Oscar last year went to Top Gun: Maverick (shudder memory), not All Quiet. This is, in fact, the first year the Sound Oscar...

The 25th Annual Who'll Be Back?
So…a very good year, climaxing in an Oscar show whose winners it’s hard to argue were undeserving (even if not “my favorites”). What to do, after the big event (to which the entire year builds) has passed? Well, after putting away dishes, and indulging in a few late sleep-ins, the obvious answer is,...

Civil War reviews
As Sabin notes in another thread, Alex Garland's newest has premiered at SXSW, and is getting strong reactions (not all good, but it's clearly something): https://variety.com/2024/film/reviews/civil-war-review-1235942401/ https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-reviews/civil-war-review-kirste...

Re: Welcome to the 97th Academy Awards
Main prediction: it's going to be a fall-off year; by the time nominations are ready to go, people will be lamenting that some of this year's entrants hadn't held off for 2024's less competitive field. This is partly based on what Bill James calls the plexiglass principle -- in his (baseball) world,...

Re: I'm always here for the Trivia
Many people noted that the '00s were the first decade since the 60s without a single female winning for screenplay. So, it might be worth pointing out that we've now had such a winner every single year this decade so far: Emerald Fennell in 2020, Sian Heder in 2021, Sarah Polley last year, and Justi...

Re: Oscar Ceremony
I'm seeing a few complaints about how predictable the ceremony was, which is something we've been complaining about a little bit. The biggest surprises were Best Sound and Best Actress, both of which were BAFTA winners. It was refreshing the blogger consensus failed in several areas, but the fact t...

Re: Oscar Ceremony
mlrg wrote When Tom Hanks presented best picture to The Hurt Locker he also didn’t recap the nominees and opened the envelope straight away. I don’t recall anyone complaining about that back then. The short answer is bc this felt more chaotic. [/quote] As I said in an edited portion below: this hap...

Re: Oscar Ceremony
So... My experience of the Oscar show, when it finally arrives, is always so scattered -- I'm hearing the jokes, monitoring the winners, but also serving drinks, dinner and dessert, chatting with friends...it all becomes a blur. I have my overall impression, but it takes me till after I've watched m...

Re: In Memoriam
People have often complained that the concentration on the performer has obscured some of the names of those being remembered, but this year was the worst -- everyone at my place was shouting they couldn't see them. And they kept moving the screens around, making it even harder to focus on them. And...
