A few more possible directors: John Carpenter, Werner Herzog & Mira Nair
As for actors: Annette Bening, Michelle Pfeiffer, Gong Li & Debra Winger. Or even Julie Andrews for a bit of star power even though she's won a competitive Oscar already.

Re: Notable Firsts and Records
Cate Blanchett's 8th acting nomination takes her to joint second on the list of non-Americans. Laurence Olivier leads that list on 10 but Blanchett is now tied with Judi Dench and Peter O'Toole.
The only other person currently working with more than 6 nominations is Kate Winslet (7).

Re: Telecast Discussion
I don't know if Russell Crowe was officially banned for his post BAFTA scuffle in 2002 but he's not been nominated for a BAFTA or Oscar since (over 20 years now) after 3 straight nominations in a row for both. If it was just down to performances I'm sure he would have had at least one further nomina...

Re: Notable Firsts and Records
I thought I'd have a look at a few other possibilities for most acting Oscar winners in a film and I think I may have found the winner: The Player with 12 winners (Tim Robbins, Whoopi Goldberg, Cher, James Coburn, Louise Fletcher, Joel Grey, Anjelica Huston, Jack Lemmon, Marlee Matlin, Julia Roberts...

Re: Notable Firsts and Records
Chastain's win raises the number of acting winners who appeared in The Help to an impressive 7 -- all female (Chastain, Stone, Davis, Spencer, Janney, Spacek, Steenburgen). I feel like there must be some disaster movie with more, but I don't know offhand. The Swarm (1978) also has 7 winners - Micha...

Re: BAFTA Winners
Despite (or maybe because of) the odd nominations the BAFTAs managed to predict almost every category at the Oscars - this is probably the closest they have ever matched.
As far as I can see the only difference was cinematography.

Re: BAFTA stuff.
That's what you get when you let juries decide the "nominations."
If you look at the Best Film category that is what the general membership voted for as it didn't have a jury.

Re: The Oscar Shortlist - 2020
I've seen Welcome To Chechnya, it's a very good documentary and well worth seeing. The visual effects are quite strange, as I was watching the people who were being protected It looked like the side of their faces had some blurryness to it and I didn't really see the point in just doing such a small...

New BAFTA Rules
Here's a link to the new BAFTA rules: http://www.bafta.org/about/mission/the-bafta-2020-review Longlists are back but expect some more unusual nominees in acting and directing (and there will be 6 nominations in those categories). The big change is that juries will select the nominees so I expect th...

The Rogue Song
Thought I'd let you know in case you hadn't seen it that there is a reconstruction of The Rogue Song on youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cekirq79Fzk It has the complete soundtrack so you can at least hear why Lawrence Tibbett was nominated for an Oscar. There is about 30 minutes of footage an...

Re: Has anyone seen East Lynne or The White Parade?
The oldest book I've got is "60 Years of the Oscar" by Robert Osborne and it only lists The Racket & 7th Heaven alongside Wings for Best Picture and then Chang, The Crowd & winner Sunrise in the Artistic Picture category. They were the films that received the honorable mention cert...

Has anyone seen East Lynne or The White Parade?
Just wondering if anyone has seen East Lynne (1931) or The White Parade (1934) which I believe still survive in the UCLA archive. I've still got a couple of DVDs to watch of early Oscar Best Picture nominees and then they will be the last ones (apart from The Patriot) that I haven't seen. Obviously ...
