Re: Best Supporting Actress 1988

I accidentally voted for McDormand, and I'm kicking myself for it now. Who I really meant to vote for was Michelle Pfeiffer. None of the other roles are extraordinary and most (i.e. Weaver) seem to fit the actress's own persona. As I'm hoping most of you know, virtuousness is one of the most diffic...

Re: Categories One-by-One: Documentary Short

Stranger at the Gate is the exact kind of cringe that Oscar voters eat up when it comes to race and religion. If that “you’ll be tattooed until people think you’re Black” short that was even worse than Green Book from the same year could win, this could too.

Re: Best Actress 1952

Still can’t vote here as I still need to see David and Hayward but having just seen The Member of the Wedding I have to say that Julie Harris performance is probably one of the worst best actress nominated performances ever. The constant whining, screaming, machinated, over the top performance make...

Re: 93rd Oscars: Ceremony Discussion

Just popping in to say that not having clips for acting categories is always a horrible decision. The average viewer at home has likely not seen all the nominees. I thought they wouldn’t do it again after the awful 12-minute segments from 2009 where former winners described the roles of each nominee...

Re: 92nd Oscar Nominations Announcement

I was really hoping for some love for The Farewell which was an outstanding feature. I knew the Academy would go with Cynthia Erivo or Awkwafina but certainly not both, and I figured Zhao Shuzhen could pull a Marina de Tavira and sneak in, though her nod was mostly coattails for Roma love. And I wou...

Damien Bona in the NYTimes

This popped up as I was browsing Facebook. The Times put out a list of six books to binge before the Oscars, and Inside Oscar was listed.

Re: What's everybody reading?

Since the beginning of the year, I've finished Jane Smiley's A Thousand Acres, Michelle Obama's Becoming, and Edith Wharton's The Age of Innocence. I think I'm going to start my Black History Month binge early with Esi Edugyan's Washington Black and Richard Wright's Native Son.
