Re: Our Top Ten of 2019

I tried to make a 2019 list a while ago but I never finalized it. Good year. I think this might be mine today. I would say that everything 5 and under is pretty flux-y. I don't quite know what to put for no. 10 but I've seen Knives Out the most. I don't totally love it but I think it's a smart piece...

Re: Hit Man

I had fun. One's mileage may vary. But there are a few terrific scenes in it. I also think that it's the kind of hook that just about any filmmaker would be able to tackle it and find something fun. The best praise I can give for the Linklater film is that at least half the filmmakers who tackle thi...

So why did Coppola hang around?

Re: R.I.P. Morgan Spurlock

The comparison that leaps to mind is Michael Moore. Super Size Me was the perfect doc for 2004, the height of Daily Show’s zeitgeist. There are a lot of allegations that it was more of a crock than even suspected at the time, but it turned Spurlock into enough of a personality to get a little cottag...

Re: Cannes 2024

And now The Seed of the Sacred Fig sounds like a Palme winner.

This fest really turned itself around.

(NOTE: but it sounds like the magical realism of As We Imagine Light would also be very much up Gerwig’s alley)

Re: Cannes 2024

Good predictions although I think Grand Tour and Caught by the Tides will get something.

I’m half wondering if they create a special prize for Megalopolis.

Re: Cannes 2024

I think Toni Erdmann had the highest rating in a decade and it won nothing.

Re: Cannes 2024

Going off of first reviews but I could definitely see the Gerwig jury going for Anora. https://variety.com/2024/film/reviews/anora-review-sean-baker-1236011025/ https://deadline.com/2024/05/anora-review-mikey-madison-gives-her-all-in-sean-baker-subversive-screwball-comedy-cannes-film-festival-123592...

Re: Cannes 2024

Speaking of body horror, Cronenberg's The Shrouds sounds both old school (it sounds gross) and personal (it's' about his late wife) and except for Ehrlich it sounds like muted praise at best. https://www.indiewire.com/criticism/movies/the-shrouds-review-david-cronenberg-1235007047/ https://variety.c...

Re: Cannes 2024

dws1982 wrote Jia Zhangke's film Caught by the Tide has quietly become one of the most acclaimed films out of the festival, although it got buried in the discourse between Emilia Perez and The Substance. Jia has been an international mainstay for about twenty years now, so I could see him being a c...

Mister Tee wrote Beyond that...Magilla, are you on uppers or something? Did you not get from the reviews that The Substance is a horror movie? An apparently quite gross horror movie? Hasn't the experience of Hereditary and Us demonstrated that even horror movies critics rally behind just don't fly ...

The Apprentice is out. Reviews don't seem great. Gleiberman seems to like it okay. Also, the film depicts him as a rapist. https://www.theguardian.com/film/article/2024/may/20/the-apprentice-review-cartoon-version-of-chump-in-chief-donald-trumps-early-years?utm_term=Autofeed&CMP=edit_2221&ut...

Re: Cannes 2024

Assuming it's a deserving performance, that would be nice for Demi Moore to get an Oscar nomination at this point in her career. I wrote a post a little while ago about Sharon Stone's ubiquity when I was growing up and how quickly it seemed to flame out following her sole successful-ish bid for resp...
