Re: Best Actor 1978

I thought Olivier's performance was pure ham, but tasty, enjoyable ham nonetheless... Olivier's last mildly enjoyable role if a somewhat salty and fatty ham. By this time in his career Olivier decided he needed to make money. His financial situation was somewhat precarious and by staying in England...

Re: Best Actress 1972

Watching the YouTube clip of Liza's 1972 win, it's lovely to watch how thrilled Vincente Minnelli is for his daughter. I've always wondered what it must have been like for Vincente's other younger daughter to compete with a supernova step-sister like Liza. Also in the audience that night was Liza th...

Re: R.I.P. Edie Wasserman

I just finished reading the new biography of director Nicholas Ray http://www.amazon.com/Nicholas-Ray-Glorious-American-Director/dp/0060731370/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1313806871&sr=1-1 Nick was close friends of the Wasserman's and Lew managed Nick's career in the early years. Most...

Re: Faye Dunaway Fighting Eviction

This is interesting news. Last Summer, I read Dunaway's autobiography Looking for Gatsby and in it she talked about how important home was to her and how buying and decorating her first apartment in New York was a turning point in her life. She must have sold that place and moved to California; othe...

6 Nominees - Coming Soon?

You may have noticed in the recent Emmy nominations listings that the television Academy has six nominees in all the acting categories. They upped the number from five in 2009. One wonders if we should expect AMPAS to follow suit sometime in this decade and increase the number of nominees from five ...

If Amy Adams is Oscar nominated this year (very likely) it will be her third supporting actress nomination in six years.

My goodness, she's becoming the new Ethel Barrymore.

But he's still one of my very favorite actors and I think his work in The Lost Weekend is one of the greatest performances ever. I agree with you on that one, Damien. Billy Wilder used him so effectively in both The Major and the Minor and The Lost Weekend. Too bad Wilder didn't call on him again. ...

Yes, I seem to recall the toupee story.

I've always enjoyed Ray Milland as an actor; however, I've often read about what a colossal SOB he was in real life. I can't quite remember why, but the stories are numerous.

What is the Academy's policy on lost, tarnished or stolen Oscars? Will they give you a new one? I seem to recall that sometime in the 1980s, Rod Steiger received a "new" Oscar because his original was corroded by the Malibu salt air. In such a case, I wonder if the Academy would allow the...

This is very funny.

Does anyone know if Oliver's Story is out on DVD?

And, at the time, was Ray Milland considered a possible contender for a Best Supporting Actor nomination?
