The beloved Canadian short story master and Nobel Laureate was 92. Hard to pick a favorite of hers, but most all her stories are poignant and so well written. What a contribution to literature.

R.I.P. Steve Albini
https://www.stereogum.com/2262785/steve-albini-dead-at-61/news/ The legendary hipster, curmudgeon, and bar none best music man died of a heart attack at 61. Likely no way was he ever coming close to an Oscars ceremony, but the man was one of the most important figures in (un)popular and alternative ...

It goes without saying, but he is the only actor to have appeared in two films that each won a record 11 Oscars.

Re: Oscar Ceremony
Supposedly Ryan Gosling referred to his performance of "I'm Just Ken" as "when you lose the Oscar but win the show." I didn't thnk it was all that, but okay. The School of Rock example when No Vacancy wins the Battle of the Bands but clearly School of Rock steals the audience's ...

Re: Best Live Action Short
Any guesses as to why Wes wasn't there to accept? My theory is that he didn't want to overshadow the other nominees, though I am probably reading too much into it.

Re: 2023 Grammy Awards
For what it's worth, I do find her popularity fascinating as well, if only because this must be the closest thing to Beatlemania in my lifetime - can anyone speak to the hysteria around, say, Michael Jackson or Wham! at their absolute peak and how it compares to the blanket coverage that Swift recei...

2023 Grammy Awards
Did anyone tune in to the Grammys last night? Really rote and disappointing to see Taylor's continued dominance of these awards considering what an absolutely middling work Midnights is - but then again, what could be more on-brand for the Grammys than bringing up the world's most famous person; the...

Re: I'm always here for the Trivia
Sorry, so ashamed of myself. Of course The Great Kate still holds the most prestigious record of them all - will her four acting Oscars (all in lead) will ever be equaled, let alone surpassed? Well, Frances McDormand and Daniel Day-Lewis only have one more lead acting award to go. And of course Mer...

After winning the Variety Special (Live) category for Elton John Live: Farewell From Dodger Stadium, Sir Elton becomes the 19th person to achieve EGOT status. Newsworthy in between the expected sweeps for the Beef/Succession/Bear trio.

Re: R.I.P. Matthew Perry
I couldn't care less about Friends but he was always a treat when he popped up for Aaron Sorkin - his Emmy-nominated guest turns in "The West Wing" and of course the single-season cult show "Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip". Really tragic to see him go like this considering how har...

R.I.P. Sixto "Sugar Man" Rodriguez
The subject of the Oscar-winning Searching for Sugar Man documentary was 81. His tale would be too strange and amazing were it not for real. Great music, and great to see him get some well-earned kudos late in his life. https://www.stereogum.com/2232609/searching-for-sugar-mans-sixto-rodriguez-dead-...

R.I.P. Angus Cloud
The Euphoria star was only 25; he had lost his dad recently and took it quite hard. I'm probably a bit old (at not even 40) as I haven't watched the show, but some younger colleagues are quite shaken up by the news.

Re: R.I.P. Sinead O'Connor
Anyone who wants a crash course in what "cancel culture", as defined in modern terms, truly looks like would do well to study the career of Sinead after the SNL hysteria. It was a heinous dogpile that would have destroyed even the strongest of people. Although she never backed down or chan...
