I tend to only put in a Top Ten at the end of the year. However seeing as the local festival has just wrapped here is that list. Vancouver International Film Festival 2008: ***** Heaven On Earth (Canada) - Deepa Mehta (Water) continues to impress me 17 years after I saw her first film. Sell Out! (M...

The Land of Wandering Souls was an excellent documentary. I really wanted to see this when it played in Vancouver at the festival but couldn't fit it in.

And no one mentions Barney Miller? I was just thinking about that show yesterday. I was at the right age for the great 70's sitcoms - and I remember watching the first episodes of M.A.S.H. and Mary Tyler Moore, etc., and watching them until their final episodes. I liked almost everything and these ...

Agreed, Treasure Of The Sierra Madre. Rented it again recently. Also rented The Snake Pit, watching it a second time with the commentary. It was even better than I had remembered it being when I saw it 20 years ago. De Havilland at her best!

A Beautiful Mind was one of those movies which people didn't just like, they went on about how it affected them; blah blah blah. And I had to listen to it as everyone I know or work with knows how focused I am on film. It was painful! And so was the movie. I heard the same about The Cider House Rul...

Wow, that was simple. Clooney. Although I would put Caine in second.

Saw My Blueberry Nights yesterday and it is a true and worthy Wong Kar Wai film. I am a huge fan of his work while not actually loving every movie he makes. MBN contains every one of the elements which make a Wong Kar Wai film what it is - colour, varied film speeds, repetitive use of music, the en...

I can understand Getting Home winning this. It is a lot of fun. I was hoping that it would have been China's official entry for the AMPAS Foreign Language category this year.

That is strange. I saw The Post-Modern Life of my Aunt in 2006!
I agree totally with Siqin Gaowa getting the acting prize, she was very good.

Also nice to see Mad Detective getting something...

It is too bad that it didn't get noticed before it's nomination because it missed out on a screenplay nomination for sure.

The first half hour or so bored the crap out of me and I would have walked out except for the fact that I was in a packed festival screening. I would have been too embarrassed to crawl over 7 or 8 people to get out. So I stayed and I am glad. About half way through that dreary dinner scene I realiz...

Is anybody else a member of Goodreads? It's a website where people can list the books they've read, are reading, and are on their bookshelf to read. I just joined up, here's a link: Goodreads This sounds like a completely pointless ridiculous waste of time and for sure is right up my alley! I love ...

For films like Eastern Promises or Water, which were filmed mostly outside Canada, I think it may have depended on cast and crew being primarily Canadian. Perhaps financing factors in as well. I agree that it is nice to see Pinsent and Mueller-Stahl get some recognition. Danny Glover is also good i...
