Re: New Developments III

I think a larger trend that we will see play out will be the widening gender gap with young people in support for Republicans versus Democrats—it's a striking development. If it was Pete Buttigieg saying the same things I'm not sure your nephew would be voting Socialist. Regardless, despite clearly...

Re: New Developments III

Magilla, I wonder what choices your nephews would make if they were in a state where Harris had a better chance of winning [that they're leaning Democrat for the Senate vote tells me they're being quite thoughtful about their vote]. We saw something similar in the UK elections. Kier Starmer's decisi...

Re: New Developments III

a) I've only seen AOC's initial video where she discusses the Green Party and points out just how much of a non-entity it is locally or in between elections. I thought it was pretty astute, to be honest, but there's also a tonne of detail that I'm missing. b) Honestly, given the evolution of the wor...

Re: The Wild Robot reviews

“Brother Bro” has it in his Best Picture top ten. Which speaks both to enthusiasm for it and… him. With a lot of these kids, I just keep reminding myself that I had Enemy at the Gates at the top of my predictions all 2000. Me too!!! To Tee's initial point, it is actually a little weird how anemic t...

Re: Venice Film Festival Winners

Perhaps the Screenplay award for I'm Still Here will boost Best Actress nomination chances for Fernanda Torres and maybe even her mother, soon-to-be 95-year-old Fernanda Montenegro, for Best Supporting Actress. Walter Salles, director of I'm Still Here , of course, directed Montenegro in Central St...

Re: Queer reviews

This new generation of Oscar forecasters are a bunch of baby brains. I'm excited for this film but at no point did I think to myself "Luca Guadagnino doing William S. Burroughs? I'm writing that down for Best Picture sight unseen!" I think what's fascinating/frustrating is that a portion ...

Re: Kicking Off the Fall Season

Thanks, as usual. That we haven’t considered a thread like this to the tail end of August indicates just how disappointing a year this has been. It’s tempting to say we’re judging in comparison to 2023. But when you look at prior years, the sheer paucity of candidates is disheartening. While we woul...

Re: New Developments III

I'm gonna be a dick for a minute and say that I responded far more negatively to Cori Bush throughout her congress-ship (?) than I expected (compared to other members of the Squad, for example). That said, AIPAC putting out racist caricatures is not a great look. Not surprising, but disappointing.

While I don't disagree with the overall gestalt ofbthe article, I wouldn't be as readily dismissive as it appears to be.

Re: Cocktails with George and Martha

A) As someone for whom the Albee play is a foundational text in my development as a theatre/culture fan, this book is pretty essential and I'm surprised at just how much I didn't know. B) I don't know who you'd cast, but a miniseries about Taylor, bookended with the making of Cleopatra and Who's Afr...

Re: New Developments III

Okri wrote Harris to hold first rally with running mate Tuesday in Philadelphia So that's a big hint that it's Shapiro, right? That or Harris is trolling us hard. No sense in restating my concerns until it's formally announced. One thing I will say is that the Democrats have handled the transition ...

Re: New Developments III

Part of me thinks she needs to just pick Shapiro so she gets that clearest path to 270*. So far I’m very impressed at the campaign rollout so I trust them to pick the right person. *because the other side is going to try to steal it by hook or by crook That is definitely my biggest fear. I read som...
