Re: I'm always here for the Trivia

I don't believe Scorsese was a producer of Taxi Driver and AMPAS staggeringly overlooked him in 1976.

Re: Oscar Nominations Announced

The gender make up of the directing branch (91% male in 2012, though no doubt its better now) AND the fact that Barbie is ultra-feminine (so much pink) shouldn't be dismissed as contributors to the omission there.

Re: Oscar Nominations Announced

So Hilary Clinton tweeted about Gerwig/Robbie missing nominations.

I'm... conflicted.

Re: Oscar Nominations Announced

I think best actress is as close to a jump ball as we will get, but Bening winning for Nyad would be like Glenn Close winning for Albert Nobbs. I think she's squarely 5th. I also think there's something weird about how AMPAS has responded to that coterie of actresses that came to prominence in the 8...

Re: Oscar Nominations Announced

I think we all had the sense after BAFTA that nothing was really cleared up. No kidding! SAG forecast 17 of the eventual 20 acting nominees which is the most overlap between Oscar & SAG since 2016. If we just exclude the extra nominee in each BAFTA category, there's only 13/20 overlap. That's a...

Re: Oscar Nominations Announced

More thoughts to come, but the level of applause for Diane Warren floored me. I'm petty enough wish-cast it as ironic, though More thoughts and shout outs A. Sabin's early thoughts that Past Lives wouldn't get anything outside of picture/screenplay B. Tee on Gerwig. AMPAS going for Triet as opposed ...

Re: I'm always here for the Trivia

Not true trivia, but two members of Tee's game (near misses and discussed performers) got nominated this year, Blunt (2006) and Wright (2021).

Re: Final Oscar Predictions

I can’t shake the feeling of Domingo weakness, despite his universal TV-precursor showing. And Leo hasn’t missed a nomination since The Departed, where he had category confusion. Would love to predict Scott, and will be delighted if he makes it, but tough to justify. J. Edgar anyone? Though whether...

Re: BAFTA Nominations

making some ask, do Brits even know that indigenous Americans count as diverse? Aha? Why should Brits be fully adjust to American sensitivities? Indigenous Americans being count as diverse is not a given. It's a political perception. (And are these the same Americans who refer to Guillermo del Toro...

Re: BAFTA Nominations

Not that I presume their job is to fit into Oscar consensus -- I'd be delighted if they went even further off the beam. The problem is, people seem to want them to serve two masters: be a good Oscar precursor, but also -- in the name of racial inclusion -- vote for a bunch of people they're not oth...

Eric wrote: Thu Jan 18, 2024 10:15 am BAFTA couldn't have more pinpointedly kneecapped Oppenheimer's two biggest threats if they'd made a conscious effort. (American Fiction as well, but the longlists already tipped off that inevitability.)
Remember how organizations did that for Slumdog Millionaire?

Re: BAFTA Nominations

Ehh, Killers is arguably a story that would appeal more to Americans as well re:Gladstone.

I'd argue that Saltburn overperformed compared to All of us Strangers.

The Holdovers and Maestro quietly overperformed. No Barbie/Gerwig in director (Tee, take a break from Awards Daily).

Re: PGA Award Nominations

re: The Color Purple When I was thinking of it as a best picture nominee, it was because I thought SAG AND the general public would go for it in a big way. I didn't give my credence to the fact that it was "avoiding" the festivals because I don't really think in those terms/consistently ha...

Re: PGA Award Nominations

If this turns out to be the AMPAS 10, can you remember a better slate? Of the 8 I've seen to date, Maestro is probably the least good -- and i mostly quite liked Maestro. (The two remaining are Poor Things and the Zone of Interest, and seeing how they're among the year's most acclaimed, it's hard t...
