Re: Last Seen Movie - The Latest Movie You Have Seen; ratings

Steel Country / A Dark Place (Simon Fellows, 2019) 6/10 Irish Andrew Scott, who plays Moriarty in "Sherlock", does quite an about-turn here playing an obsessive compulsive small-town American garbage collector. When a child goes missing and is found drowned in a creek he starts an investi...

Reza wrote:W. Howard Greene & Harold Rossen were awarded Honorary Oscars for their colour cinematography of The Garden of Allah.

Thanks for the reminder! I had forgotten that.

Best Cinematography 1936

Another year with just three nominees, but at lest all three had decent cinematography. Where, though, were Show Boat , San Francisco , A Tale of Two Cities , Romeo and Juliet , The Garden of Allah , The Prisoner of Shark Island , The Trail of the Lonesome Pine , Lloyds of London and The Great Ziegf...

Best Cinematography 1937

This has to be the weirdest group of nominees yet in our newest to oldest look at the category. Wings Over Honolulu is an instantly forgettable romantic drama. How they managed to nominate that while ignoring the likes of Captains Courageous , Lost Horizon , The Prisoner of Zenda and The Hurricane i...

Re: Web of Sex Scandals

Barbara Stanwyck was a great actress. She was also a McCarthyite who publicly supported the House Un-American Activities Committee and the blacklist. How do you weigh her artistic contributions against the lost artistic contributions of the careers she helped to destroy? Stanwyck didn't help destro...

Re: R.I.P. Edward Lewis

His credits far exceeded hers but according to the daughter they worked hand-in-hand for 73 years so it's safe to assume that she worked with him on many of those other projects. Not only is there no information on Mildred's passing, it's take almost three weeks since Edward's death for the Hollywoo...

Re: R.I.P. Edward Lewis

For someone not generally well known, Lewis and his wife Mildred had an impressive list credits, indeed. She died in April at 98. He was 99.

Re: Epstein Case

Footnote to my previous comment:

I am far more concerned about what the country's current chief executive and his cronies get away with on a daily basis than I am about a hoary quarter-century old story about what a former president may or may not have gotten away with.

Sabin wrote Happy to explain. Quick note, it's just been announced that the next American Crime Story is about the Clinton Impeachment and it will be told through Monica Lewinsky's POV. It will be released next year. When I say "there is a wide-scale reappraisal of Clinton's legacy and conduct...

Re: Epstein Case

Big Magilla wrote Clinton was a cheater but not a predator. He was never linked to underaged women and girls. The word predator doesn’t just mean underage girls. In the wake of MeToo, there have been larger conversations about believing women and many don’t feel as though some of Clinton’s accusers...

Re: Epstein Case

Skepticism about the moon landing was something I never heard until many years later when conspiracy theorists began to conflate the actual 1969 landing with the 1977 film Capricorn One in which the moon landing was faked. No one I know took them seriously. Capricorn One was about a failed Mars lan...

Re: Epstein Case

That's more like it! Everyone has a theory. Mine is that Epstein committed suicide because he knew he wasn't going to get out of it and couldn't stand the thought of being cooped up forever the way he was. If others were complicit in his death it was that they deliberately turned a blind eye to it, ...

Re: Epstein Case

Mister Tee wrote If this is true, I'm considerably less sanguine that the younger generation is going to save America. I mean, WTF? Did your friends buy so deeply into Bernie Kool-Aid that they retroactively believe a quarter-century's worth of bullshit about the Clintons? Only imbeciles believe th...

Best Cinematography 1938

Back to just one category! For shame! Eleven nominees and nothing for The Adventures of Robin Hood even though it won for Art Direction and Film Editing Tony Gaudio eventually won for the inferior A Song to Remember while his co-cinematographer Sol Polito never won despite three nominations. Also co...

Re: Epstein Case

Updates: 1. He was taken off suicide watch after just 6 days allegedly because he complained through his attorneys that it was dehumanizing - he had no sheets or blankets and no clothes - had to wear a smock day and night which gave him no protection against the rodents! 2. Trump has taken to the Tw...
